The Métis Nation of Alberta Provincial Council is seeking a distinguished professional to serve as Chairperson of the Board for the newly established Rupertsland Institute. This is a half-time paid position, under a five year term, with the possibility of renewal upon successful review. The Chairperson shall set strategic policy direction, and shall provide administrative and financial oversight of the Rupertsland Institute, and will abide by the agreements held by this Company. Candidates for this position must be willing to act within the ‘Articles of Association’ as established, and the ‘Memorandum of Association’ and must comply with the lawful obligations of a Director as required by law including the decisions held by the Company shareholder at Annual General Meetings.
The Chairperson’s explicit duties shall be made available to interested applicants, but generally, will include the authority to convene and preside over Board meetings; sign agreement and contracts, hire and direct the CEO, and represent the Rupertsland Institute as chief spokesperson at all levels of government, industry, post-secondary institutions, and the Aboriginal community.
The Rupertsland Institute is a non-profit company under the Alberta Companies Act. The Métis Nation of Alberta, on behalf of all Métis citizens in Alberta, is 100% shareholder of the Rupertsland Institute. The Rupertsland Institute, as an affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta, is mandated to provide education and training services for Métis citizens residing in Alberta.
Under a five-year agreement with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, the Rupertsland Institute will serve as “a Métis Centre of Excellence” and will assist Métis people to prepare for, find, and keep employment.
In addition, the Rupertsland Institute will also sign an Affiliation agreement with the University of Alberta to build a Métis research centre and an academic think-tank specifically for scholars to conduct independent research for peer review, and to publish their findings on various matters, policies, and issues respecting the Métis people.
POSITION REQUIRMENTS:
Comprehensive Knowledge of:
• Métis Nation governing structures and their objectives;
• Alberta post-secondary institutions and their objectives respecting Aboriginal people;
• Public and private sector institutions and their objectives respecting Aboriginal people.
Skills:
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills;
• Effective conflict resolution and negotiation skills;
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills;
• Proven management and extensive financial experience;
• Ability to combine personal and professional skills together with contacts, and experience to optimize both short-term and long-term performance of Rupertsland Institute.
Qualifications:
• Must hold undergraduate, graduate, or professional designation from a post-secondary institution;
• Must hold a record of accomplishment in chosen career, or field of endeavour;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications;
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as required;
• Ability and commitment to exercise Chairperson functions;
• Have no financial obligation to the Métis Nation of Alberta;
• Have never held status of bankruptcy;
• Have never been suspended by the Metis Nation of Alberta Judiciary Council.
• Must be able to vote to hold a Métis majority in the event of a tie.

The Métis Nation of Alberta is seeking two distinguished Métis professionals from the public or private sector to serve on the Board of the Rupertsland Institute. Each position is a three-year term renewable upon review to a maximum of two consecutive terms. These are not paid positions and are strictly voluntary. All travel and meeting costs however, will be paid by the Rupertsland Institute.
As a member of the Board of Governors for the Rupertsland Institute, each Board member will be responsible for the mandate and policy direction of this service and research institution. The Rupertsland Institute is a non-profit company created under the Alberta Companies Act. The Métis Nation of Alberta, on behalf of all Métis citizens in Alberta, is 100% shareholder of the Rupertsland Institute. The Rupertsland Institute, as an affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta, is mandated to provide education and training services for Métis citizens residing in Alberta. Rupertsland is also working with the University of Alberta on a separate affiliation agreement to build a Métis research centre specifically for academics and Métis scholars to conduct independent, peer-reviewed, research on various matters respecting the Métis.
Candidates for the Board must be willing to act within the mandate of Rupertsland Institute while ensuring compliance with all obligations required by law, including the institution’s objects and Articles of Association. They must also be willing to abide by decisions arising from Annual General Meetings, and to act with honesty and integrity when promoting the programs and successes of Rupertsland Institute to Métis citizens.
Duties of Board members will include the review and approval of strategic business plans, annual budgets, operational policies, administrative functions as required, and review/approval of all documents as presented by the CEO from time to time.
Other duties shall include the co-selection and appointment of the Director for the Métis Research Institute; quarterly monitoring of the activities and financial status of the Rupertsland Institute; and from time to time, the appointment of government and industry representatives to the Rupertsland Board.

• Must hold a valid driver’s license and have the ability to travel as required;
• Must have the ability and commitment to exercise a Director’s functions;
• Must not hold outstanding debt to the Métis Nation of Alberta, or have the status of bankruptcy, or have been suspended by the Métis Nation of Alberta Judiciary Council.

Position: F/T Client Resource Assistant
Location: Peace River

The Métis Nation of Alberta is seeking a competent individual to provide reception and administrative support to Métis Employment Services in Peace River.
The Client Resource Assistant will provide assistance to clients and visitors in a prompt, efficient and professional manner by responding to enquiries, assisting clients with self serve or assisted services, make referrals to appropriate community resources, maintaining and updating the labour market resource area, working one-on-one with clients to assist with career research and job search activities, entering data into the data base and maintaining records.
Qualifications:
Human Services Certificate or Office Administration certificate/diploma or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft software applications – Word, Excel, Outlook; basic data entry and computer maintenance knowledge.

Position: Employment Counsellor
Location: Métis Employment Services Centre (MES) Calgary, Alberta
Closing Date: Position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found
Reporting to the Manager of Client Services the Métis Nation of Alberta is seeking a competent Employment Counsellor. Responsibilities of this position include assisting clients in making decisions and plans relating to education, training and employment. In addition, the Employment Counsellor will handle the case management of an assigned group of clients, including case file documentation, reporting, follow-up and recommending employment initiatives to resolve local area needs.
Qualifications required:
- Human Service diploma/certificate or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 2 years direct counselling experience.
- Knowledge of the local labour market supply and demand.
- Knowledge of basic employment assessment techniques.
- Knowledge of local employment services, training programs and service agencies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft software applications – Word, Excel, Outlook; and basic data
- Workshop and Presentation skills.
The successful candidate will possess:
- Interpersonal skills to relate effectively with Aboriginal clients, providing support and encouragement through counseling.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
- Demonstrated ability to assist clients to identify strengths and challenges in order to achieve their employment goals.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Driver’s license, reliable vehicle and ability to travel as required.
- Knowledge of the Métis Nation of Alberta, its goals, objectives and services provided would be an asset.
Salary Range: $32,680 - $40,850 plus benefits and professional development opportunities.
