ATEP goes Urban at U of A
The Aboriginal Teachers Education Program (ATEP) has plans for an urban cohort at the University of Alberta Faculty of Education's Edmonton campus, beginning in the fall of 2009. Forming an Urban ATEP cohort will allow for the first time the inclusion of the Metis urban population and for the identification of their needs. The intent of ATEP is to allow students to complete their Bachelor of Education degree in Elementary Education, while maintaining family, community and cultural connections.

MNA Education Initiatives
The Education Sector took part in a number of educational initiatives in 2008-09. There are five priority initiatives. They include:
1. Metis High School Completion Project
The goal of this project is to increase high school completion rates among Metis students by encouraging, mentoring and supporting Metis learners with their transition from junior high school into high school.
2. Phase II Feedback on Western & Northern Canadian Protocol Charter 3
This goal of this project is to continue to provide Métis teacher and community feedback to Alberta Education on the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol (WNCP) Charter 3 project, Our Way is a Valid Way: Professional Development Resource for Teachers K-12.
3. Development of a Metis Historical/ Cultural Resource Kit for use in K-12 Programs
Throughcollaboration, consultation and communication with community members, partners and stakeholders, the MNA will develop and pilot a Metis Historical/ Cultural Kit for schools and teachers that will build on and include the draft Health and Wellness Dance Learning Resource. The MNA Education Sector will work cross-ministry with MNA's Children's Services, Genealogy and Health Sectors.
If you think it would be of benefit for the historical/ cultural kit to be used in a school in your area, please contact the Education Manager at 780-455-2200 or 1-800-252-7553 for assistance.
4. Metis Nation of Alberta Post Secondary Project - Building on Research/ Data Collection
The goal of this project is to increase the number of Metis students accessing post secondary funding and attending post secondary institutions and career and training programs. This project will build on the research report completed in 2007/08 through MNA's Educational Access Project.
5. 2nd Annual Cross Country Run: October 3, 2008
The second annual race was recently held, in partnership with Rites of Passage School in Edmonton. This project stemmed from a need to improve high school completion rates. By establishing an annual cross country run for Métis and other Aboriginal students, we hope to create a better sense of belonging to the school community. We hope to:
- encourage Métis students to take part in extra-curricular team athletics;
- support the building of positive, caring and healthy peer relationships as Métis students take part on a team;
- support the building of positive, caring and healthy student-teacher relationships as teachers serve as coaches; and
- build capacity in and supply equipment to coaches to sustain the project in future years. For more information about how your area can help initiate a similar sport and fitness event, please contact the Education Manager at the MNA Provincial Office at 780-455-2200 or 1-800-252-7553.
